Cataract Surgery in Scranton & Wilkes-Barre, PA

Frank A. Bucci, Jr., MD, a skilled cataract surgeon has performed over 20,000 cataract surgeries, which includes over 6,000 multifocal intraocular implants. Cataract surgeries are performed in Dr. Bucci's state-of-the-art ambulatory surgery center, the Angelina Theresa Bucci Eye Surgery Center, which was established in 2000 in the memorial of his wife. Dr. Bucci proudly serves patients throughout the Scranton, Wilkes-Barre, and Hazleton areas with premium cataract surgery treatment. The surgery center offers upscale service with the latest technology and a highly-skilled ancillary staff.

Modern microsurgical techniques for removing cataracts have evolved and improved dramatically over the past 20 years. During this procedure, the eye's natural lens is removed because it became cloudy as a result of the natural aging process. In the early days, cataract surgery was performed only when a person could no longer see. The cloudy lens was removed in one piece through a large incision that required many stitches. Patients stayed in the hospital for days and after surgery had to wear thick, distorting cataract glasses or deal with cumbersome contact lenses to see well enough to function. Cataracts are generally believed to be an unavoidable part of the aging process. But the good news is cataract surgery has undergone tremendous technological advances.

Today, Dr. Bucci can remove the eye's natural lens through a microincision (less than 3 mm), breaking the lens apart with ultrasonic vibrations and gently suctioning it from the eye. The natural lens is replaced by a foldable intraocular lens which is inserted through the microincision. It is then unfolded and placed into a permanent position. Because of the design of the incision and its small size, it seals itself and no stitches are required. Patients leave our private surgery center and return home soon after the procedure to relax for the rest of the day. Most patients can return to full activity the next day.

Although cataracts are mainly found in older adults it is still important to have a comprehensive eye exam at least every two years. With offices in Scranton, Wilkes-Barre, Hazleton, and surrounding northeastern PA areas, we encourage you to schedule an exam with our specialists today. The earlier the detection of your cataracts, the better your treatment will be. Call our offices today!

New 'Adjustable Cataract Lenses
Now Available in Scranton & Wilkes-Barre'

At Bucci Laser Vision, leading cataract & laser surgeon, Frank Bucci, MD continues to help set the standard in cataract & presbyopia-correcting surgery with the introduction of the breakthrough Light Adjustable Lens™ (LAL) from RxSight.® Patients of Bucci Laser Vision now have the unique ability to adjust and preview your vision until it meets your personal desires and lifestyle requirements. The Light Adjustable Lens is capable of delivering superior vision outcomes that standard, non-adjustable lens implants cannot match.

With traditional intraocular lenses (IOLs), we perform measurements BEFORE cataract surgery in order to select the best IOL to try to achieve your vision goals. In the past, once your surgery was completed and the IOL had been implanted, there werevery limited options to adjust the lens power. But that was before the FDA-approval of the Light Adustable Lens.

The Light Adustable Lens (LAL) is the first and only FDA-approved intraocular lens (IOL) that can be adjusted after surgery to fine-tune your vision. The LAL is made of a special photosensitive material that can be reshaped in response to ultraviolet light. First, laser cataract surgery is performed and the LAL is implanted. Then, 2 to 3 weeks after surgery, our Light Delivery Device (LDD) is used to adjust the lens based on the manifest refraction. Each light treatment takes approximately 90 seconds and, unlike with standard cataract lenses, patients are able to test their vision options and work with our surgeons to direct the amount ‘Light Adjustments’ needed after surgery to fine-tune their vision to their own preference.

Our next-generation LAL is designed for patients who would like to reduce their dependence on prescription glasses for near vision after cataract surgery. This vision option can be experienced by our patients to see how it works in your daily activities. Once our patients achieve vision that matches your goals and expectations, the final light treatment is performed to permanently lock in your post-operative vision.

Our LAL offers tremendous advantages over standard intraocular lens implants currently available. The lens is an ideal option for patients who have previously undergone any type of refractive surgery, which makes accurate preoperative measurements more difficult and significantly increases the chance of a postoperative refractive surprise. The LAL also offers patients the opportunity to try monovision or mini-monovision and to achieve their best possible vision.

The cataract removal and IOL implantation process is the same as if you selected a non-adjustable IOL. Then, in the weeks that follow, Dr. Bucci and his team will customize your vision through a series of non-invasive light treatments that take only a few minutes each. You may need 3 to 5 total light treatments over a period of 1 to 2 weeks to reach your vision goals. Once your vision is adjusted, a final light treatment is used to lock in the results.

Amy Jo's Cataract Surgery Experience

Testimonial Cataract/ Multi-Lx Elite

I have one good eye to see near and far, my right eye. It does double duty because my left eye is legally blind. When I had to have my cataracts removed I choose the Multi-Lx Elite "premium cataract surgery" . It was to restore sight as much as possible in my good eye.It has taken awhile for my eye to adjust, but I feel I have reached my goal.

When I had concerns or questions Dr. Bucci answered and addressed my issues and personally refined my post-op treatment. I feel he and his staff were on my side and I'm grateful to him for giving me improved eyesight back.

Gratefully,
Henrietta D. - Drums, Pa. (Cataract/Multi-Lx Elite)
