What Are Cataracts? There have been many advances in cataract surgery techniques and IOL (intraocular lens) technology in recent years. With over one million procedures performed each year, many patients now experience a quality of vision that is even better than before they developed cataracts.
Dr. Bucci removes cataracts with advanced technology “phacoemulsification” or small incision surgery. Most patients only require topical, eye drop anesthesia. After the eye is completely anesthetized, a self-healing incision of about 1/8” is made in the sclera (white part) of the eye.The cataract is then broken into microscopic particles and gently removed from the eye. To compensate for the removal of the eye’s natural lens, an IOL is implanted into the same thin tissue (capsular bag) that held the natural lens. The eye then naturally seals itself, eliminating the need for sutures, and full activity is permitted the next day.
Originally, a conventional “monofocal” lens was used which would correct both eyes for distance only, leaving patients to rely on bifocals or readers for intermediate and near vision.
Today, patients have an alternative IOL, a new generation of “multifocal” IOLs that not only provide distant vision, but intermediate and near vision as well. These new “premium” IOLs can potentially eliminate dependence on glasses for cataract and pre cataract patients. Dr. Bucci has been named the #1 Multifocal surgeon in Pennsylvania – top ten in the USA.
There are a number of premium IOLs available, each having different advantages. The latest advancement in technology is the TECNIS. This lens distinguishes itself from all other intraocular lenses because it is the ONLY implant that provides excellent near visual function (like reading) in BOTH bright and dim light.
Dr. Bucci will determine which IOL is best for you based on the individual characteristics of your eye, as well as your lifestyle. To find out if you are a candidate for this procedure, call Bucci Laser Vision to schedule a consultation exam with Dr. Frank A. Bucci, Jr. or attend one of his informative seminars.
Bucci Laser Vision is proud to serve the NEPA and Poconos regions with offices in Wilkes-Barre, Pittston, Scranton, Old Forge, Hazleton, Stroudsburg, Brodheadsville and Mt. Pocono. Free consultations are available to any patient seeking spectacle independence through refractive surgery. Call 1-877-DR-BUCCI for more information.
Both cataract and pre-cataract patients older than 40 years of age who are dependent on bifocals or reading glasses are likely candidates, and patients who have these lenses implanted prior to developing cataracts will never need cataract surgery in the future. If you are seeking the TECNIS®, Crystalens®, ReZoom® or ReSTOR® IOL lens options in Pennsylvania Dr. Bucci can help you decide if this option is right for you!Learn More

A cataract is a clouding of the normally clear crystalline lens of the eye. The lens is normally extremely clear, and allows light to pass through and be focused onto the retina. When the lens is not clear, and light is impeded from passing through it, a cataract is said to be present in the lens. The term “cataract” comes from the Latin word for waterfall (cataracta) as very advanced cataracts may look white, like foamy water, and be visible to an observer with the naked eye.Learn More
Modern microsurgical techniques for removing cataracts have evolved and improved dramatically over the past 20 years. During this procedure, the eye's natural lens is removed because it became cloudy as a result of the natural aging process. In the early days, cataract surgery was performed only when a person could no longer see. The cloudy lens was removed in one piece through a large incision that required many stitches. Patients stayed in the hospital for days and after surgery had to wear thick, distorting cataract glasses or deal with cumbersome contact lenses to see well enough to function.Learn More
Exciting advances in lens implant technology now allows patients to choose multifocal lens implants to correct their vision. Monofocal lens implants provide excellent vision at one point, usually distance. Multifocal lens implants provide a range of clearer vision at near, intermediate and distance, thereby allowing the performance of most daily activities with little or no dependence on traditional or progressive bifocals. Dr. Bucci will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of multifocal lenses during your free consultation.Learn More
