Corneal Transplant Surgery

Corneal Transplant Surgery is performed if vision has been blurred due to scarring from an eye injury or infection, Keratoconus ( a steep curving of the cornea.), or hereditary corneal failure.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is an eye disease in which the passages that allow fluid in the eye to drain become clogged or blocked. This results in a build-up of fluid in the eye which causes an increase of pressure inside the eye. This increased pressure damages the optic nerve which connects the eye to the brain. The optic nerve is the main carrier of vision information to the brain. Damage to it results in less information sent to the brain and loss of vision. Noticeable symptoms of glaucoma may be a gradual loss of side vision or blurred vision.

AK

Astigmatic Keratotomy - One of the earlier and widely accepted methods of correcting nearsightedness was called Radial  Keratotomy (RK). For those patients who had astigmatism along with their nearsightedness, Astigmatic Keratotomy (AK) was also performed.

Astigmatism is caused by a cornea that is more curved (steeper) in one axis than the other, much like a football. This causes light to focus on more than one place on the retina, resulting in blurry or multiple images.

The AK procedure places arced incisions in the steeper axis (outside of the optical center of the cornea) causing the cornea to relax and become more spherical or round like a baseball. With a spherical cornea, light rays come to focus at one point on the retina, resulting in a clearer image.

RK

Radial Keratotomy Surgery - Treats nearsightedness and or astigmatism. RK permanently changes the shape of the cornea as a result of making a number of incisions around the center of the eye. This causes the center of the cornea to flatten, which changes the focusing power of the cornea.

YAG

Neodymium YAG Laser Surgery - Subsequent to cataract or certain other operations, aftereffects sometimes occur which interfere with vision. Two such aftereffects are clouding (opacification of the posterior capsule) and development of scar tissue (synechiae) within the eye can occur. If your vision is impaired by either of these occurrences, Dr Bucci will focus the laser beam on the opacified membrane or scars. There is no need to make an incision or cut into the eye when preforming this procedure, therefore, there is no need for anesthetics.

What Are Cataracts?

A cataract is a clouding of the normally clear crystalline lens of the eye. The lens is normally extremely clear, and allows light to pass through and be focused onto the retina. When the lens is not clear, and light is impeded from passing through it, a cataract is said to be present in the lens. The term “cataract” comes from the Latin word for waterfall (cataracta) as very advanced cataracts may look white, like foamy water, and be visible to an observer with the naked eye.

Cataract Surgery

Modern microsurgical techniques for removing cataracts have evolved and improved dramatically over the past 20 years. During this procedure, the eye's natural lens is removed because it became cloudy as a result of the natural aging process. In the early days, cataract surgery was performed only when a person could no longer see. The cloudy lens was removed in one piece through a large incision that required many stitches. Patients stayed in the hospital for days and after surgery had to wear thick, distorting cataract glasses or deal with cumbersome contact lenses to see well enough to function.

Multifocal / Accommodative

Exciting advances in lens implant technology now allows patients to choose multifocal lens implants to correct their vision. Monofocal lens implants provide excellent vision at one point, usually distance. Multifocal lens implants provide a range of clearer vision at near, intermediate and distance, thereby allowing the performance of most daily activities with little or no dependence on traditional or progressive bifocals. Dr. Bucci will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of multifocal lenses during your free consultation.
