Dr. Bucci is the originator of the Multi-Lx Elite™ procedure and is the first and only eye surgeon in Northeastern Pennsylvania to routinely implant multifocal lenses for patients to correct nearsightedness and farsightedness in younger patients without cataracts and cataract patients. An overwhelming majority of Dr. Bucci's patients who had the Multi-Lx Elite™ procedure never need bifocals again.

What is Multi-Lx Elite™

Multi-Lx Elite™ is a term used to describe a Multifocal Lens Exchange. Multi-Lx Elite™ is a surgical procedure that uses the same successful techniques of modern cataract surgery to correct nearsightedness and farsightedness. Multi-Lx Elite™ may be the procedure of choice for those candidates who are too nearsighted, too farsighted or have corneas that are too thin for LASIK. It is also a viable alternative for those who wish to eliminate their dependence on traditional or progressive bifocals and those who may be showing signs (even without symptoms) of developing cataracts.

Correct focusing of the eye is determined by the curvature of the cornea (outer window of the eye) along with the focusing power of the eye's natural lens (inside the eye). Most other vision correction procedures attempt to change the focusing power of the cornea. Multi-Lx Elite™, on the other hand, corrects nearsightedness and farsightedness by replacing the eye's natural lens with a multifocal, intraocular lens that provides focusing power without glasses at multiple distances, including near, intermediate and far.

Modern microsurgical techniques for removing cataracts have evolved and improved dramatically over the past 20 years. During this procedure, the eye's natural lens is removed because it became cloudy as a result of the natural aging process. In the early days, cataract surgery was performed only when a person could no longer see. The cloudy lens was removed in one piece through a large incision that required many stitches. Patients stayed in the hospital for days and after surgery had to wear thick, distorting cataract glasses or deal with cumbersome contact lenses to see well enough to function. Cataracts are generally believed to be an unavoidable part of the aging process. The good news is cataract surgery has undergone tremendous technological advances.

Multifocal IOL Technology

Exciting advances in lens implant technology now allows patients to choose multifocal lens implants to correct their vision. Monofocal lens implants provide excellent vision at one point, usually distance. Multifocal lens implants provide a range of clearer vision at near, intermediate and distance, thereby allowing the performance of most daily activities with little or no dependence on traditional or progressive bifocals. In December of 2005 at the Las Vegas IOL Symposeum, Dr. Bucci was the first ophthalmic researcher in North America and Europe to demonstrate that mixing and matching Multifocal lmplants Multi-Lx Elite™ achieved the highest levels of spectacle independence and satisfaction.

The Multi-Lx Elite™ Procedure

Multi-Lx Elite™, like today's technologically advanced cataract procedure, is performed on an outpatient basis and takes only a few minutes. The primary difference between cataract surgery and Multi-Lx Elite™ is that cataract surgery is performed to remove a patient's cloudy lens and Multi-Lx Elite™ is done to reduce a person's dependence on glasses or contact lenses.

Today, surgeons can remove the eye's natural lens through a microincision (less than 3 mm), breaking the lens apart with ultrasonic vibrations and gently suctioning it from the eye. The natural lens is replaced by a foldable intraocular lens which is inserted through the microincision. It is then unfolded and placed into permanent position. Because of the design of the incision and its small size, it seals itself and no stitches are required. Patients return home soon after the procedure to relax for the rest of the day. Everyone heals somewhat differently, but many patients report improvement in their vision almost immediately and most resume normal activities within a day or two. Multi-Lx Elite™ is usually performed on the second eye within a week to several weeks after the first procedure. Multi-Lx Elite™ can also be combined with an incisional corneal procedure, Multi-Lx Elite™ - AK, to correct astigmatism.

Dr. Bucci has performed nearly 1,500 Multi-Lx, Multi-Lx Elite™, and Multi-Lx Elite™ cataract procedures freeing countless patients from their dependency on bifocals. Dr. Bucci has published and lectured internationally on the Multi-Lx Elite™ procedure and feels it is a very effective procedure for appropriately selected candidates. In Dr. Bucci's hands, the surgery takes 6 to 8 minutes and is painless both during and after the surgery. No needles, no stitches and no patches are used with the Multi-Lx Elite™ procedure.
