LASIK

Q.
What is LASIK?

A.

LASIK is a procedure that improves vision by changing the shape of the cornea with a laser and is a very effective treatment for a wide range of vision problems. LASIK continues to grow in popularity and is the number one elective surgery in the country.

Q.
Why do people have LASIK surgery?

A.

Research has shown that there are four main reasons that people choose to have LASIK. They are:

  • Life simplification: No longer having to deal with glasses or contacts
  • Independence: Freedom from dependence on glasses and/or contacts
  • Performance: Ability to perform better in sports-related activities
  • Ability to see 24/7 when it counts: Better vision for all occasions (e.g., at a play, evening out, playing golf)

Q.
What results can a person hope to achieve?

A.

LASIK has proven overwhelmingly successful in reducing dependence on glasses and contact lenses. Clinical studies show that most LASIK patients (with mild to moderate prescriptions) have the potential to achieve 20/20 vision or near 20/20 vision. Generally, this means they no longer need or have reduced their dependence on glasses or contacts to drive, play sports, watch movies and TV, or participate in careers requiring excellent vision.

Q.
Who is a good candidate for LASIK

A.

LASIK can treat a very broad range of nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. The best way to determine who is a good candidate is with a thorough eye exam. Candidates must be 18 years of age or older, in good general health, and have good eye health with no diseases such as cataracts or glaucoma.

Bucci Vision
Q.
How long will the LASIK procedure take?

A.

The LASIK laser vision correction procedure usually takes approximately 51/2 minutes in our LASIK Suite located in Kingston, Pennsylvania. The actual laser time is approximately 1 minute.

Bucci Vision
Q.
Are there any risks associated with LASIK?

A.

Some potential complications include conditions such as dryness, night glare, under or over-correction, and loss of best-corrected vision. The risks of surgery should be discussed fully with the doctor prior to the procedure. Additionally, proper post-operative care helps to identify and address any potential healing complications.

Bucci Vision
Q.
Does the LASIK procedure hurt?

A.

There is almost no pain involved with LASIK, but many patients find the procedure to be slightly uncomfortable. Anesthetic drops are used to numb the eye just before surgery begins and patients may be given a mild sedative to relax. After the procedure, the eye may feel a foreign body sensation or slight irritation for a few hours, like a grain of sand in your eye, but most patients are very comfortable shortly thereafter.

Bucci Vision
Q.
What is the recovery process like?

A.

Most LASIK patients usually see quite well the day following their procedure and may be able to resume most of their normal daily activities. Although the speed of visual recovery depends on personal healing patterns, most patients notice dramatic visual results within the first few days following their procedure.

Q.
What is the difference between Conventional LASIK and Custom LASIK?

A.

Custom LASIK is an individualized laser vision correction treatment that is wavefront guided. With the Custom LASIK procedure, nearsighted, farsighted and astigmatic individuals have the potential to achieve a new level of vision.

Custom LASIK uses wavefront-guided technology to measure unique imperfections in the eye. The technology then produces a treatment for the eye and the information is transferred to the laser. The doctor then uses that information to fine-tune the procedure thereby providing a new level of precision and accuracy.

Bucci Vision
Q.
Is the actual LASIK part performed the same way? Or is Custom LASIK a completely different procedure?

A.
The actual LASIK procedure is performed exactly the same way in both Conventional LASIK and Custom LASIK. However, the pre-op testing for Conventional LASIK and Custom LASIK differ. The wavefront analyzer used with Custom LASIK brings a new level of knowledge and accuracy to the surgeon, giving a more precise and personalized result.

Bucci Vision
Q.
What does LASIK cost?

A.

LASIK is highly cost effective when compared to purchasing multiple pairs of glasses or contact lenses. In fact, over a 20 year period, the average patient would spend between $12,000 to $16,000 on contacts and $6,000 on glasses.

Q.
Will I have perfect vision after the procedure? Will I still need glasses?

A.

98% of typical patients achieve 20/40 vision or better. The degree of improvement may vary from individual to individual.

LASIK cannot correct a condition known as presbyopia, or aging of the eye. This occurs normally around age 40 and may require the use of reading glasses. So any one over the age of 40 who has LASIK may need reading glasses after the procedure.

Bucci Vision
Q.
Are there any risks in having LASIK?

A.

The FDA recognizes Laser Vision Correction as proven, safe, and effective. LASIK, as any surgical procedure, has limitations & risks. Only a very small percent of LASIK patients experience complications or side effects. The risk of a serious vision - threatening complication is less than 0.1%.

Some less serious risks include under or over correction, infection, healing haze, and night glare.

Bucci Vision
Q.
Does LASIK hurt?

A.

There is no pain during the procedure. Some patients may experience slight pressure from the speculum which holds the eye open during the procedure.

* Individual results may vary.

Directly following the procedure patients can experience light sensitivity, picking, burning and watering eyes.

Bucci Vision
Q.
How do I know if I am a candidate?

A.

You must be at least 18 years of age with a prescription that has not changed within a year. You must have healthy corneas, and a common pupil size.

A complete eye exam performed by your surgeon including corneal topography is necessary. * compare all surgeons before choose your practice.

Q.
Will I still need to wear glasses if my surgeon recommends a Multifocal lens?

A.
The results will vary depending upon your vision, lifestyle and the anatomy of your eyes. Most people find that they need glasses to read small type or drive at night. Most people, however, can go to the store or conduct many of their day's activities without depending on glasses. In the cases studied, 92% of those who received the technology of Multifocal lenses "never" or only "occasionally" needed to wear glasses.

Bucci Vision
Q.
How is the Multifocal different from traditional single-vision intraocular lenses?

A.
The IOL is a multifocal intraocular lens. Unlike traditional single-vision lens implants, Multifocal lenses provides quality vision both at a distance and up close. Traditional single-vision lenses usually provide good vision only at a distance with limited ability to see objects that are near without glasses.

Bucci Vision
Q.
How does a Multifocal lens replace the cataract?

A.
The natural lens inside the eye is gently removed through a small micro-incision in the periphery of your eye's cornea. The cataract-impaired lens is then removed through this incision and the lens implant is inserted in its place to permanently replace it. The procedure usually takes about 15 to 45 minutes and vision is usually improved immediately.

Bucci Vision
Q.
How long after surgery until I see my best?

A.
Like most procedures, this depends upon the overall health of your eye. For most people, vision is noticeably better immediately and continues to improve during the first few weeks after the procedure.

Bucci Vision
Q.
Does the Multifocal lens require an adjustment period?

A.
Yes. For most people, there is a period of weeks when your brain is learning to "see" up close and at a distance with the new lens. This adjustment period is usually complete within 6 to 12 weeks. Also, like all multifocal lenses, some people report halos or glare around lights. Again, for most people this diminishes over time. For some, it becomes less troublesome but never completely goes away. Most people report that the ability to see near and far outweighs any visual side-effects associated with the lens.

Bucci Vision
Q.
Are there any risks having the Multifocal lens procedure?

A.
Yes. With any surgical procedure there are risks. The biggest risk with any cataract procedure is infection. Fewer than one percent of patients having a lens implant procedure ever get an infection and most are treated successfully with medications. Infections, however, can cause a severe or total loss of vision.
